Pediatric Eye Exams in Houston, TX

Children do not always recognize when their vision is blurry or one eye sees better than the other. At Ella Eyes, we provide pediatric eye exams in Houston to evaluate your child's vision, check eye health, and identify concerns while their visual system is developing. We explain our findings clearly so you understand the next steps.

Why Pediatric Eye Exams Matter

Clear, comfortable vision helps children participate in reading, classroom activities, and play. A school vision screening can flag some problems, but it does not provide the same assessment as a comprehensive eye exam. We look beyond how clearly your child reads an eye chart to evaluate eye alignment, focusing, and overall eye health.

An exam can help identify nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and conditions that affect visual development, including amblyopia, often called lazy eye.

What To Expect During the Exam

At our Houston office, we review your child's medical history, family eye history, and any concerns you have noticed at home or school. We use age-appropriate testing to assess vision in each eye and how the eyes work together. Children do not need to know their letters to have their vision evaluated.

Our eye doctor may recommend drops that dilate the pupils and temporarily relax focusing. These help us examine the inside of the eyes and measure your child's prescription accurately. We will explain what to expect, including temporary light sensitivity or blurry near vision.

Signs Your Child May Need an Eye Exam

Contact our team if you notice any of these changes:

  • Frequent squinting or difficulty seeing distant objects
  • Holding books or screens unusually close
  • Headaches or tired eyes during reading
  • Closing one eye or tilting the head to see
  • An eye that appears to turn inward or outward

These signs can have different causes, and some vision problems have no obvious symptoms. An examination helps determine whether an eye condition is involved.

Follow-Up Care as Your Child Grows

We recommend follow-up timing based on your child's age, prescription, eye health, and risk factors. A failed vision screening or new concern should be evaluated promptly rather than waiting for the next routine visit.

If glasses are needed, we explain the prescription and when they should be worn. For children with progressing nearsightedness, we can discuss whether myopia management is appropriate. When additional specialist care is needed, we explain the reason for a referral.

Bring your child's current glasses, medication list, and any school screening results to help us prepare a care plan.
